Choosing the Right Time to Climb

The best part of climbing Mount Batur is witnessing the sunrise. To ensure clear skies and comfortable hiking conditions, aim for the dry season, which stretches from April to October. However, if you prefer a less crowded experience, consider the shoulder months (April, May, September, and October) before or after peak season.

Booking a Tour or Going Solo?

While a solo trek might seem adventurous, it’s strongly discouraged. The volcanic terrain can be unpredictable, and having a guide by your side offers invaluable benefits. Experienced guides prioritize your safety, possess local knowledge for the best routes, can handle permits, and provide refreshments along the way.

Packing List for Safe Climb

Layering is key! Pack a warm fleece or sweater, a windbreaker for the summit, and comfortable hiking pants. Don’t forget sturdy footwear – hiking boots with good ankle support are crucial on uneven volcanic terrain.

A headlamp is an absolute must for the pre-dawn ascent. For added comfort, pack sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat to shield you from the sun. Stay hydrated with a refillable water bottle, and bring some snacks to keep your energy levels up. And lastly, capture the memories with your camera!

4 Routes to Reach the Summit of Mount Batur

1. The Pasar Agung Hiking Trail

The Pasar Agung hiking trail is the shortest route and by far the most recommended route to reach the crater rim of Mount Batur. You can access this trail by car or motorcycle. To reach the trailhead, you must first pass through the Jati Temple and head towards the Pasar Agung Batur Temple. Average Duration is 60 – 75 minutes from the Pasar Agung Temple parking lot to the main summit, which covers around 6.5 km round trip.

Once you reach the Pasar Agung Temple, you can start your ascent immediately. You will pass through a rather steep and long stretch of rocks, which will take about 30 to 40 minutes. After passing through these rocks, you will reach the second peak of Mount Batur. This peak is better known as the Kanginan Peak by the locals.

In fact, from the Kanginan Peak, you can already witness the sunrise from an altitude of around 1,570 meters above sea level. However, if you want to see even more breathtaking views, you should continue on to the main summit. This will take an additional 30 minutes or so via a sandy trail that can be quite slippery.

2. Toya Bungkah Hiking Trail

The Toya Bungkah hiking trail starts in the Toya Bungkah hamlet, Batur Tengah village, about 100 meters to the left of the road before Toya Devasya Hot Spring and 100 meters after Batur Natural Hot Spring. The round trip takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes to 2 hours, with a route length of about 4.5 km from the parking lot to the summit.

The trail is located on the eastern side of Mount Batur. If you are a bit late in starting your hike, you may only be able to see the sunrise from the middle of the trail. You can take a motorbike to the 75% point on this trail. There will be people along the way offering motorbike taxi services to this point. This is just an alternative option and you can choose it if you really feel you need it. 75% of the trail is considered easy as it is quite flat and does not require too much exertion. On the way down, you can add on a detour to the mountain peak and see the crater. Then, halfway down, you can look for a shortcut that leads directly to Post 3 (where you started the hike). After the hike, you can also stop by the hot springs (Batur Natural Hot Spring) for a relaxing soak.

3. Serongga Hiking Trail

The Serongga hiking trail is located on the northeast side of the foot of Mount Batur, precisely in the Serongga hamlet, Songan B village, Kintamani Bali. It is about a 20-minute drive north of the Toya Bungkah start point.

The trail is slightly shorter compared to the Toya Bungkah trail. This trail is located on the northeast side of Mount Batur, so if we are a bit late, we can still see the sunrise during the hike. To reach the summit of Mount Batur, it takes about 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes with a route length from the parking lot to the summit of only about 3.75 km.

The Serongga Trail is a bit more challenging than the other trails due to its remote location. It’s recommended that you hike with someone familiar with the trail to avoid getting lost. The trail itself is also more difficult as about half of it is covered in sand, which can be tiring to walk on and slippery on the descent. Additionally, if you take the Serongga Trail, you won’t be able to add a detour around the crater and can only see it from a distance.

4. Pura Bukit Mentik / Culali Hiking Trail

The Pura Bukit Mentik hiking trail, also known as the Culali Trail. To reach this starting point, you must pass through winding and slippery roads. Trucks frequently use this route to transport sand and lava rocks for construction materials. If you decide to use this starting point, make sure your vehicle is in good condition, especially the brakes and tires.

This trail takes you past the new crater of Mount Batur, located on the western side of the mountain’s belly. The trail is quite long and will provide a different experience for experienced hikers. There is a spacious camping area on the mountainside along this trail that you can use to spend the night if you want to watch the sunset and continue hiking the next morning to see the sunrise.

The Pura Bukit Mentik/Culali Hiking Trail is challenging due to several factors. First, the trail is quite long, and most people take 2.5 to 3 hours to reach the summit. This can be a tough hike for even experienced hikers, especially in the hot Indonesian climate. Second, the trail’s location on the western side of Mount Batur means that it is not ideal for sunrise hikes. You simply won’t be able to see the sunrise from the summit if you take this trail. Finally, the trail itself is demanding. Hikers will encounter a long stretch of rocks and sand, and about 45 minutes before the summit, you will have to pass through a section with a steep incline. Therefore, this trail is not recommended for beginners or anyone who is not in good physical condition.

Transportation and Pick-up Options

Most tours handle this seamlessly, with pick-up times around 2 am from your hotel. Solo travelers will need to arrange their pre-dawn transportation beforehand – taxis or ride-sharing services are readily available in Bali.

The Ascend to the Summit

The hike itself is considered moderately challenging, but manageable with a decent level of fitness. The path consists mainly of volcanic scree, a loose gravel-like terrain, so expect uneven footing. The key is to pace yourself and take breaks whenever needed. Your guide will be there to help you navigate the terrain and adjust your pace for a smooth climb.

Witnessing the Breathtaking Sunrise

As you reach the summit, a magnificent panorama will unfold before your eyes. Imagine the first rays of dawn painting the sky in vibrant hues of orange, pink, and purple. These colors will dance across the majestic peak of Mount Agung, Bali’s highest mountain, while the volcanic crater lake Batur shimmers serenely below. This breathtaking vista is what makes the Mount Batur sunrise trek an unforgettable experience.

Post-Sunrise Activities

After soaking in the mesmerizing sunrise, you’ll have a chance to explore further (at an additional cost) with a tour of the volcanic crater itself. Most tours also include a delicious breakfast at the peak, a perfect way to refuel and savor the moment before descending the mountain.

Fitness for the Challenge

While the Mount Batur trek is considered moderately challenging, it’s achievable for most with average fitness. If you lead a more sedentary lifestyle, consider incorporating some light exercise or walks into your daily routine, a week or two beforehand. This will help improve your stamina and make the climb more enjoyable.

Be Prepared for the Elements

Mountain weather can be unpredictable, so it’s always wise to pack light rain gear, just in case. Checking the local weather forecast before booking your climb is also a good idea. This will give you a heads-up on what conditions to expect and help you pack accordingly.

Respecting the Local Culture

Mount Batur holds deep significance for the Balinese people. It’s an active volcano and a revered spiritual landmark. As a guest, it’s important to be respectful of the local culture. If your trek takes you near any Hindu temples, be sure to dress modestly, covering your shoulders and knees. Your guide will be able to provide more specific guidance on proper etiquette. By being mindful and respectful, you’ll ensure a positive experience for yourself and contribute to preserving the sacredness of this beautiful place.
